OPPOSITION LEADER ROBERTSON TOURS 2011 COUNTRY EXPO – URGES GOVERNMENT TO SUPPORT REGIONS
Back to Press releasesThe 2011 Country and Regional Living Expo has again colourfully showcased the attractions of regional NSW to prospective businesses and residents, Opposition Leader John Robertson said today.
Touring the Expo in Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, Mr Robertson said it was inevitable many city folk would be tempted to relocate to the country during their lifetime. "Many Sydneysiders yearn to escape the big smoke as their life circumstances change – call it a sea-change or tree-change or what you will," Mr Robertson said.
"The Country and Regional Living Expo plays an important role in promoting the diverse lifestyle opportunities available – and it was terrific to visit Rosehill Gardens and meet stall-owners on Saturday.
"As the new Leader of the Opposition, I will work my tail off to reconnect and win the trust of regional communities across NSW.
"I am proud that Labor has funded the Country and Regional Living Expo since 2003 – and increased funding for the event last year.
"I call on the Government to commit to future funding for the Expo. They should also keep faith with regional communities by appointing a Minister for Regional Development."
Mr Robertson toured the Expo with Mick Veitch, Shadow Minister for Regional Infrastructure and Services, and Steve Whan, Shadow Minister for Resources and Primary Industries.
"As the Sydney metropolitan area becomes more congested, families are already seeking out opportunities to live in regional NSW," Mr Veitch said. "Rural and regional NSW offers the prospect of a friendlier and more relaxed lifestyle – it\'s a great place to raise a family."
"Regional NSW has a tremendous amount to offer residents and businesses wishing to relocate," Mr Whan said. "It is great to see the Expo going from strength to strength."
